Las Aguilas Argentinas

Near Sarmiento, I still had some 1500 k’s to kill; I stopped around 8 at a gas station. Saw a pile of motorbikes. Small one’s, Zanilla’s 150 cc. I talked to the guys and immediately we became friends. I was talking to a bunch of Aguilas Argentinas, the Argentine Eagles. Just before I met those guys I wondered where to sleep. It was late, cold and I didn’t want to pay another 20 euros for a shitty Hostal. Tent was no option, too cold. They invited me to come to a hotel and see what happens. I couldn’t afford the joint and prepared myself to sleep in some sort of ditch, no fucking lie. Daniel came with a funny solution. He invited me to sneek into his room and spread my matras. ‘Nobody saw you.’ That was true. Those UFO-guys made me invisible for a short while. So I slept for free in a three star hotel. Next moring, breakfast, coffee, didn’t pay a single peso, and slept well. Anyway, lets continue this epic story. Next day I decided to drive along with the Eagles. We had fun and it was an easy trip. The Guzzi never came out of her third gear. Those Zanilla’s look big and strong, but they aren’t. I would say 20 horsepower, tops. But mother of balls, they use them! The Eagles were on a fortnight trip. They came all the way from Buenos Aires. Drove 5000 (five thousand!) k’s on those little mosquitoes. The president had his wife at the back on a fully loaded motorcycletje. And they had fun, a lot of plain and simple motorcycle fun. You can say to hell with you, my bike is bigger than yours and you are an embarrassment to the road. That’s what the big, posh BMW would say. But that’s just the whole thing. The Eagles started their motorcycle community a year ago and have already more than hundred very devoted members. Every member has a Zanilla that only cost 2000 dollar. The things with the Eagles is that you’re not judged by your motorcycle but by your personality. And it works. I’ve met the finest people.

So lets go back to that lonely night when I almost had to decide to sleep in a ditch. I also wondered what to do in Ushuaia. I knew that any kind of accommodation would ruin my little tiny savings. The savings that I need to feed all those little mouths, although at that time I didn’t know that a V-twin was coming up, and to pay for the bush pilot license when I’m back in Bolivia. Daniel said: ‘Hang on, we have a brother in Ushuaia. It would be an honor for him if you come by.’ Problem solved. On that same cold night I also wondered – you understand I had some serious thinking to do – what to do with the Guzzi. She makes this sound that terrifies me. Daniel said: ‘Hang on, we know one of the best Moto Guzzi-mechanics in Buenos Aires. It would be an honor for him to work on your bike.’ So three ‘hang ons’ in three minuts. Just y talking to this guys all my problems were solved. That’s how I traveled guys, on good fortune and showing a little respect. So, what did we learn from this little episode?

a) That big posh BMW’s suck
b) That Paul has good semen
c) That you never judge a man on his appearance

Anyway, I’m still in Ushuaia. Have my own little appartment, thanks to the hermanos of the Eagles and thanks to hermano Ruben and hermana Gabriella. What a lovely couple. I stare out off the window and see how the leaves drop and how dogs get vicious killed by cars. Today the three of us left the city for a little motorcycle tour, to the end of routa 3. I decided only to take pictures of my hosts. Although the weather was lousy – cold and there was hardly light to take a good picture, I did my best. When we came back I showed them the pictures. They were pleased. Especialy Gabriella. She has no pictures of herself. And she has this sweet smile. Résumé of the day – everybody happy.

He conocido a las mejores personas.

  1. years and years i drove a big fat harley (i had 4 of them). I swapped the last harly (which in fact was the most beautiful bike form all the bollenstreek) for a 7 year old BMW K1200 RS. The beamer is strong, relieable and very cheap. And now my only brother “ give my lovely bike names like posh and suck. *@#$^Y^&&^&!!!

    nice story anyway

    vaya con Dios

  2. Hoi Paul,

    According to Paul – 22:42 (op 10 April ’08)
  4. Rond laten vliegen?

    According to mir – 08:35 (op 11 April ’08)

    According to Paul – 15:37 (op 11 April ’08)
  8. Ho, Ho!!!

    Yo, yo zeggen we!

    Nou, nou.

    Paulus, Paulus,
